The firm’s history dates back to 1968, when Peter Abeles and Harry Schwartz established Abeles, Schwartz and Associates in offices on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In the 1970s, with the addition of new partners, the firm changed its name to Abeles, Schwartz, Haeckel and Silverblatt, Inc.

In 1977, future Managing Principal Paul Phillips joined the firm and was made a partner in 1980. That same year, the firm moved its location to 10th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village where it would stay for the next three decades. Richard Preiss joined the firm in 1981 and became a partner the following year. With the addition of John Shapiro, who joined the firm as a partner in 1984, the firm changed its name to Abeles, Phillips, Preiss and Shapiro (APPS) and later Phillips Preiss Shapiro Associates (PPSA).

Paul Grygiel joined the firm in 2000, becoming a partner in 2002. In 2010, the firm moved to Hoboken and changed its name to Phillips Preiss Grygiel LLC. Elizabeth Leheny joined the firm in 2005, becoming partner in 2011. Keenan Hughes joined the firm in 2008, becoming partner in 2011. In fall 2017, the firm announced that the firm would now be called Phillips Preiss Grygiel Leheny Hughes LLC. Kate Keller joined the firm in 2012, and became a partner at the end of 2021. The firm moved to its current location on Hudson Street in Hoboken in mid-December 2021.
